Family Voices is a relatively un-explored radio play by Harold Pinter, where three voices call out to each other through a series of letter-monologues but go ultimately unheard. Sometimes known as the ‘Ghost Trio’, this broken family speak into the void but are ultimately unable to connect.
I directed and self-produced this piece under mentorship by resident Bristol Old Vic and Almeida Theatre Young Company director Julia Head. I staged the radio play visually, setting it in an uncannily empty domestic space, where the characters share space but cannot see each other. Stuck in an endless loop of preparing food for the family (never) to come home, the characters fill the stage with piles of chopped food that they make live onstage. This led to a seemingly endless loop of cleaning for me! I only have photos from a phone for this one – I hadn’t started properly doing production photography yet!
